Golf Places 3rd in Section, Weigold ’19 Takes Home Gold

Conditions were rainy, windy, and overall brutal for high school golfers yesterday as the majority of New Jersey held its sectional championships despite the poor weather.

The golf team battled the elements and ended up finishing third in the Non-Public B, North section with a team score of 335. Finishing ahead of GSB were Newark Academy (325) and Montclair Kimberly Academy (331). It was a bittersweet finish for the Knights, as finishing third in the section is a great accomplishment but does not qualify them for the team state championships next week.

A bright spot for Gill was senior Moritz Weigold as he had the lowest score on the day and was crowned individual champion of the section. He shot an incredible 76 despite the tough playing conditions. Since he won the section, Weigold automatically qualified for the individual Tournament of Champions which takes place this upcoming Monday.

Also putting up solid scores for Gill were sophomore Graeme Hollingshead (82), senior Abhay Puri (88), and juniors Drew Kramer (89) and Nick Policano (91).

“We are disappointed that our team as a group could not advance to the state championships,” said head coach Mike Cascini. “At the end of the day, we all played the same course so it’s all fair. However, we are very proud of Moritz for winning and advancing individually and we know he will represent us well next week.”
