Stephen Olson joins the GSB coaching staff this winter as the head boys' and girls' varsity fencing coach. He has been fencing competitively for over eight years, and he also coaches at the Manchen Academy of Fencing.
Olson was a prolific fencer in high school, being named Third-Team All-State in foil his senior year, and his foil squad placed top-three at the state championships his sophomore, junior, and senior years. He won the CHAOS tournament (tournament for college club fencing teams) during the 2017-2018 season while competing for Drexel University. He also medaled in Men's Foil at the USFA Division II Men’s Foil National Championship.
"My favorite part of fencing is the ethical aspect," says Olson. "I believe fencing instills values of respect and honor into the minds and actions of those who take part. Traditionally, and even now, the sport is still centered around the idea of an honorable duel."
Olson has also refereed the NJSIAA District and State Championships, and he says, "GSB fencers always stood out for having a very respectful and eager-to-learn group of students, and I am excited to be working with them this season."
