Golf Shooting for Top Spot
The golf team experienced its best season in school history last year as the program finished 15-2, won the Skyland Conference Mountain Division title, and enjoyed a mid-season ranking of top-10 in the state.
According to head coach Mike Cascini, the team can be even better this year.
“Last year we came up a bit short in the sectional tournament,” he said. “It was the first time we had been there as a team and we had a younger squad so there were some nerves and we did not play that well. This year, I am hoping to win sectionals and advance to the Tournament of Champions. I really do not think it is out of the question to believe we will compete for a state title.”
Cascini has good reason to be this confident in his players. He did not lose any seniors from last year’s impressive squad and is returning four players that he believes can make the individual Tournament of Champions.
“Senior Mortz Weigold is one of the most competitive players in the state,” said Cascini. “Junior Nick Policano made the individual sectional championships as a freshman so he is also very talented. Sophomore Graeme Hollingshead is a young player but is a top underclassman in the area. Also, sophomore Sophie Chang has a great chance to finish as one of the top-50 girls in the state.”
Of course, there will always be up and downs to every season that the team will have to be prepared for. The Knights face a tough regular season schedule as they go against top independent schools such as Delbarton, Pennington, Pingry, and Ranney. Also, one of their contributors, junior Drew Kramer, recently suffered a broken wrist and will be out for a month. Cascini will rely on his captains, Weigold and Abhay Puri, to help guide the team during the season and expects junior Evan Varma to make important contributions throughout the year as well.
“The biggest thing is that we need to play well on the days that matter the most,” Cascini said. “If we can do that, then we really do have a formidable lineup and our goals will be very obtainable.”
