The boys’ and girls’ track teams were hard at work the past two days as the Knights competed at the Prep B Championships on Monday, May 6, and were right back at it the following day at the Skyland Conference championships.
Gill enjoyed great showings at the Prep Championships. The boys’ squad was once again led by the throwers, as the Knights won every throwing event of the day.
Gill’s best event was the shot put as Luca Del Vescovo ’20 won the title with a throw of 38 feet, eight inches. Grabbing second place was Mark Giordano ’19 (37 feet, 11 inches) and rounding out the top-three finishes was Joe Licata ‘22 (36 feet, six inches).
The Knights also had a great showing in discus as Licata took first place with a throw of 115 feet, two inches while Del Vescovo grabbed third (87 feet, five inches). In javelin, Mark Rusas ’19 finished first overall with a throw of 119 feet, three inches. Robert Covello ’21 also earned points with a fifth-place finish (71 feet, seven inches).
GSB also had success on the track. The mile was the most exciting race of the day, as William Strong ’22 (4:49.90) just edged teammate Niels Rongen ’21 (4:49.99) by nine one-hundredths of a second to finish third and fourth, respectively. James Koether ’21 rounded out the scoring by taking fifth place (4:58.18). Also scoring in the running events was Ansh Patel ’21 as he took sixth in the 400 (59.20). Overall, the boys’ team finished third.
The girls’ squad also had a handful of top-six finishes. The Knights were led by Eve Ryan ’19 as she won the long jump title with a jump of 16 feet, six inches. Lilly Fischer '19 also took fourth in the event (15 feet, seven inches). Also having a high finish for Gill was Anna Mikula ’20 as she took second in the javelin with a throw of 98 feet, seven inches. Rounding out the scoring for the girls was Molly Walker ’22 as she took sixth in the high jump with a jump of four feet, six inches. The girls finished seventh overall.
At the Skyland Conference Championships, the Knights were able to record five top-12 finishes against elite competition. Ryan had the highest finish of the day for the girls as she took sixth in the long jump (16 feet, three inches). She also took 12th in the high jump (four feet, 10 inches). Also having a high finish was Mikula as she took seventh in javelin (102 feet, one inch). The top finisher on the boys’ side was Jack Feldman ’19 as he took sixth in the discus (136 feet, five inches) and also scoring points was Rusas as he took 12th in the javelin (135 feet). The boys finished fourth overall while the girls took fifth.
