The boys’ lacrosse team could not have asked for a better start to the 2019 season as the Knights defeated Bishop Ahr 13-1 this past Wednesday.
Trevor Migliaccio ’20 led the way for Gill with five goals and Brenen Lavoie ’21, coming off a strong ice hockey season, also contributed five points with two goals and three assists.
“It is always good to get the first ‘W’ under the belt; that is sort of the first thing you always want to check-off as soon as possible,” said head coach Byron Collins. “We made the most out of our spring break trip down in Florida and it really showed in this first game. I was pleased with the guys for making the sport a priority and I was pleased with the guys’ performance. That being said, there is still a lot of work to be done.”
The Knights will need everyone to contribute if they want to continue their early season success, as Collins played 15 different players in the season opener. Gill also has one of the youngest rosters in the state as 15 out of 18 members of the team are underclassmen and will rely on senior captain Jake Panza for leadership this season.
“Our number one goal is to get better every day, that’s honestly it,” said Collins. “The kids will continue to learn different things each day and winning will be a by-product of that. We have a young team so we need to be smart in how we use our players and just teach them the game while also having them learn life lessons through the game every day.”
Important dates to keep an eye out for the lacrosse team will be the start of the Somerset County tournament on April 27 and the first round of the Non-Public B tournament on May 18.
