Baseball Falls in Sectional Championship

For the third time in four years, the baseball team advanced to the Non-Public B sectional championship. Unfortunately, the Knights were unable to come away with the win in the title game as they lost a heartbreaker to top-seed St. Mary’s on Friday, May 31, 2-1.

Gill had a great pitching performance from Mike Giammarino ’19 as he was able to hold the Gaels to only one run over six innings of work. The defense also came up with some strong plays to help keep St. Mary’s at a low score.

“Michael was terrific,” said head baseball coach Dave Pasquale. “He kept us in the game and pitched well enough to give us a chance to win.”

Playing in his final game for Gill, catcher AJ Donofrio ’19 drive in the lone run of the day with an RBI single in the seventh which brought in Nate Fodor ’22 to score. Matt Kalinak ’21 also had a good day at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with a walk.

“I'm very proud of the way our guys were able to put together another great run,” said Pasquale. “Three sectional final appearances in four years is something only a handful of baseball programs in New Jersey can claim.”

Even though it was a tough end to the season, the baseball team grew exponentially throughout the year and will only be losing seniors Donofrio and Giammarino to graduation. With a lot of starters coming back next year, the Knights should continue their run of success on the diamond.
