Pasquale Earns 300th Win as Skapinetz '21 Hurls No-Hitter

Sophomore righty Joe Skapinetz tossed his first-ever no-hitter and head coach Dave Pasquale captured his 300th career victory when the baseball team defeated Bernards High School 1-0 on Friday, May 10, in Bernardsville. Skapinetz struck out nine and walked three, improving his record to 4-1 with an ERA of 1.56.

"Joe was brilliant today," said Pasquale. "He kept his pitch count low and he was able to keep a good Bernards lineup off balance all day. The 300th win is nice, but I'm most happy that it came alongside such a tremendous pitching performance."

The Knights scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning as sophomore Matt Kalinak led off with a single up the middle, sophomore Jake Sempervive was hit by a pitch, junior Michael Taylor walked to load the bases, and senior Mike Giammarino had an RBI ground out that scored Kalinak. Skapinetz escaped his only real trouble of the day in the bottom of the seventh, striking out the last batter of the game with two runners on base to secure the 300-win milestone for Pasquale.

Pasquale's 18-year head coaching career began at Newark Academy in Livingston, where he went 177-101 over a ten-year span from 1996 to 2005. He stepped away from coaching for six years (2006-2011) in order to focus on his responsibilities as Gill's Director of Athletics before returning to the dugout in 2012. Now in his eighth season back on the field, Pasquale is 123-86 as the Knights' mentor. His 2019 team is slotted for the #3-seed in the Non-Public B North bracket as they hope to recapture some of the state tournament magic that has advanced them to the sectional finals in two of the last three seasons.
