Fencing Has Good Day at Regionals; Solondz ’21 Makes States
The boys’ and girls’ fencing teams competed at the NJSIAA Regional Championships on Saturday, January 25, at The Lawrenceville School.
The girl fencers had a strong showing throughout the tournament, with women’s sabre having the highest finish of the day, placing sixth overall, and only missing a third-place finish by two victories. Caroline Solondz ’21 had an extraordinary day, winning all ten of her bouts in the team pool. This qualified her for the district individual event, where she won six out of her eight bouts. This earned her a third-place finish in district individuals and qualified her for the state individual tournament.
Women’s epee finished eighth overall, beating Bayonne, Governor Livingston, and Oak Knolls. The Knights won bouts against almost every school, being shut out only by Bernards and Ridge. Zoe O’Connor ’21 had a great first round, winning six of her ten bouts. This qualified her for the district individual tournament.
Rounding out the girls’ results were the women’s foil placing eleventh in their pool, beating Bayonne and winning individual bouts against Bernards, Kent Place, and Oak Knoll. The girls’ fencing team finished eighth overall.
The boys’ fencing team went up against some of the best competition in the state, placing tenth in epee, ninth in foil, and ninth in sabre as well; defeating Bayonne and North Hunterdon.
“This was an extremely competitive field,” said head coach Stephen Olson. “Overall, I was happy with how the kids went about fencing, and there were definitely some great highlights for the program.”
