Knights’ Magical Tournament Run Ends in Semifinals

The girls’ basketball team’s strong run in the South Jersey, Non-Public B Sectional tournament ended on Saturday, March 7, after barely falling to state power Rutgers Prep, 59-53.

It was an incredible sectional tournament for the Knights, as they kicked things off by upsetting Trinity Hall in a convincing, 63-40, victory in the first round of the tournament.

Gill followed that up with arguably its best game of the season, taking down the 16th-ranked program in New Jersey, Wildwood Catholic, 57-54, in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, March 5.

Ella Fajardo ’21 had a huge night for Gill in that quarterfinal matchup, dishing out 21 points while also recording four steals. Cailiegh Walsh ’21 was also highly productive, scoring 13 points and recording 14 rebounds and five blocks. Devyn Scott ’20 also contributed 12 points to the winning effort.

Unfortunately, the Knights could not keep up their magical run and fell to the Argonauts in the sectional semifinals.

Walsh was once again a dominant force for Gill, scoring 24 points while recording 10 rebounds and six blocks. Fajardo reached double-digits points again, scoring 17 and recorded three steals. Scott also had a final strong showing for GSB, scoring eight points to go along with three rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

“Rutgers Prep is probably a top-three team in the state,” said head coach Mark Gnapp. “We were down by two points with 50 seconds left and had the ball, so we definitely had them on the ropes, but just could not close the deal. However, I was very proud of how my team played.”
