The girls have been working hard since pre-season, and the results are evident in the team’s record: 6-0 thus far, including victories over conference-rivals Rutgers Prep on September 9 and September 20 and Franklin High on September 14.
As the season unfolds, the team will continue to rely on its core of seniors: Lila Birnberg, Martine DiDomenico (captain), Katherine Duggan, Lara Drzik (co-captain), Genny Fischer, Sharon Jin (co-captain), Carleigh Matthews and Charlotte Walsh. Joining the senior lineup are talented sophomores Andree Aloise and Hannah Cohen.
Jin is playing at first singles this season and is undefeated thus far. She played second singles last year, winning 17 matches, losing only two and claiming the Prep B title for second singles. Drzik, who played first doubles last year, has done an excellent job adjusting to her new role at second singles and has won five of six matchups thus far. Cohen also made the jump from doubles to singles and has also won five of six thus far. Cohen is playing at third singles this season.
At first doubles, the duo of DeDomenico and Aloise is currently undefeated, as is the team of Duggan and Fischer at second doubles.
As the season progresses, Birnberg, Matthews and Walsh will be playing their fair share of matches as well and adding depth to the roster.
Looking ahead, key matchups will include North Hunterdon on September 21 and a rematch against Bernards High on September 29. Other upcoming events for the team are the Somerset County Tournament on September 23-25 and the Prep B and state tournaments.
This year’s team is under the leadership of a new head coach, Ryan Carty. New to GSB this year, Carty has coached at the middle school, high school and collegiate level. In addition, he has run camps and clinics, as well as offering private instruction. The team will also rely on Chris Walsh, who returns for another season as assistant coach. Diane Becker, who coaches the JV team is also providing guidance and working with the girls on drills and strategies.
Go Knights!
