Homecoming/Family Day Preview
Be sure to come to campus tomorrow for our Homecoming / Family Day celebration. The recent wet weather has not dampened spirit on the campus, and the forecast for tomorrow looks ideal.
Excitement has been building this week for the annual event: yesterday, the Booster Club held an inaugural Home Winds walk, with more than 60 attendees walking the cross-country trail with GSB coaches and athletic director Will Taylor. Today, the campus was decked in blue and white, students were sporting spirit gear, and the annual pep rally could be heard all the way to the Todd Quad.
With sports contests, food, activities and games, Homecoming / Family Day offers something for everyone. This year, in addition to concessions at the Booster Lodge and sit-down lunch under the tent, the event also brings a dessert truck to campus for the first time. There are great activities for our younger attendees, including decorating pumpkins, face painting, and a bounce house and slide, and the dunk tank is always popular with everyone.
Our parent volunteers help make this event a success each year by assisting with setup, supporting Upper School booths and the Booster Lodge, and overseeing the pumpkin patch decorating.
Beginning at 9:00 a.m., our Middle School athletic teams take the to the fields and the courts against Wardlaw-Hartridge. Middle School girls’ tennis starts off the day followed by the co-ed cross-country team competing in its first home race of the season at 9:30am. The Middle School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams look to continue their impressive starts as they hit the fields at 10:15 a.m.
The JV squads will also be in action tomorrow as the girls’ tennis team takes on Sparta at 10:00 a.m. The JV boys’ soccer team will face Princeton Day at 12:00 p.m. followed by the JV girls’ match against Bound Brook at 2:00 p.m.
Also, history will be made tomorrow as the JV girls’ volleyball team will be having its first ever home match against Asbury Park at 12:00 p.m.
The varsity girls’ tennis team will hit the courts at 12:00 p.m. against Sparta. Gill has had a tremendous season so far, with the girls ranked 14th in the state and third in the Non-Public B standings. The Knights recently finished fourth at the Somerset County Championships with Andree Aloise ’19 and Tori Goldin ’20 taking home the county title in first doubles.
Also competing at 12:00 p.m. will be the varsity cross country teams as they host College Achieve Central Charter High School in their first home meet of the season.
Playing on the turf field at 12:00 p.m. will be the girls’ varsity soccer team as Gill faces Bound Brook in the first round of the Somerset County Tournament. The Knights have had a great season so far, posting a 7-1 record and outscoring their opponents 36-3. Additionally, congratulations to Mia Kolb ’22, who was just named Freshmen of the Week for the Skyland Conference by NJ.com!
Rounding out athletics for the day will be varsity boys’ soccer as the team takes on Princeton Day at 2:00 p.m. The Knights are coming off their biggest win of the season, in which they secured head coach Tony Bednarsky’s 500th career win on Wednesday, September 26. Gill was also recently selected as the seventh seed in the upcoming Somerset County Tournament.
