Cross Country Hits the Ground Running at NA Invitational
The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams began their seasons on Saturday, September 7, at the Newark Academy Invitational. The 5k race featured non-public schools throughout New Jersey.
The boys’ squad had a solid showing on the day, as the Knights placed sixth overall. Leading the way for Gill was Niels Rongen ’20, as he took 12th place with a time of 18 minutes and 50 seconds. Rounding out the starting lineup were William Strong ’22 (24th), Andrew Young ’21 (31st), Teddy Lazar ’20 (37th), Alex Tulenko ’22 (41st), Luke Mariak ’20 (45th), and Brian Young ’21 (48th).
Gill also had a handful of runners competing in the JV race, which included Tyler Tellalian ’23, Laksh Patel ’23, Akshay Patel ’23, Peter Horton ’23, Nico Alfaro ’23, Jacob Goldklang ’22, and Drew Vollrath ’23.
On the girls’ side, GSB had two runners compete on the individual level. Anne Wang ’22 had a top-40 finish, as she took 37th with a time of 28 minutes and five seconds, and Allison Zhao ’20 finished 41st.
“It was nice to get the first race in and get the season officially underway,” said Head Coach Mike Parker. “The effort by all of the runners was excellent, and the support to the younger runners by their upper classmates was great. We will use this first race as a test and time indicator for training moving forward.”
Gill next hits the trails on Saturday, September 14, at the Back to the Mountain Invitational.
