Scholar Athletes Honored
This spring, seven scholar-athletes from the class of 2017 are being honored by various conferences and associations for their achievements in the realms of academics and athletics. In addition, two athletes (still to be named) will be recognized at the close of the academic year with the school’s Nicholls and Creasey awards.
Skyland Conference scholar-athlete awards: Steven Bednarsky and Emma Dean
The Lehigh-bound Bednarsky has been a four-year starter with varsity soccer, helping the team to two state championships. He ended his senior season with a host of post-season honors, including Skyland Conference player of the year for 2016.
Dean is a three-sport varsity athlete—a substantial contributor to soccer, basketball and lacrosse—and a respected leader. A few weeks into the 2017 lacrosse season, she has posted 20 goals and three assists. In addition, Dean was recently highlighted by News 12, New Jersey as a scholar-athlete of the week.
Somerset County scholar-athlete awards: Sharon Jin and Armeen Mozaffari
Jin has been a four-year starter for varsity girls’ tennis. In her senior season, she led the team at first singles, winning 10 matches and advancing to the finals of the Prep B tournament.
Mozaffari has been a solid contributor to varsity boys’ soccer and indoor track during his Upper School career.
NJSIAA 22nd Annual Scholar/Athlete Awards Program 2017: Nick Cooper
One of the top goal scorers in the state, Cooper is the offensive heart of the varsity boys’ lacrosse program. With only four games of the 2017 season behind him, the Gettysburg-bound senior has posted 28 goals and ten assists, leading the team to victories over Parsippany Hills, Morris Catholic and Parsippany High. He also scored his 100th career goal this season.
NJISAA (Prep B) scholar athlete awards: Michael Morreale and Erica Phiansunthon
Morreale has been a four-year starter on the varsity boys’ basketball team. He contributed 318 points in his 2016-17 season, helping the team advance to the semifinals of the state tournament. Morreale will be heading to Muhlenberg to play basketball next winter.
Phiansunthon is a three-sport athlete, competing in varsity girls’ soccer, winter track and track and field. She is best noted for her success as a shotput thrower, having been invited to compete in NJSIAA meet of champions, the Non-Public B group championships and the Randolph Shotput Invitational. She won the shotput event at the Prep B championship this past winter.
