Survive and Advance: Knights Reach Sectional Finals
The boys’ soccer team kept its composure and did not panic after trailing Morristown-Beard, 2-0, in the early going of their sectional semifinals matchup yesterday.
Despite being the heavy favorites, the Knights allowed two quick goals in the first half and faced a serious deficit against the Crimson. However, Gavin Scavino ’22 and Jordan Canica ’21 were able to connect on goals to tie things up at two at halftime. Early in the second half, Micaah Garnette ’21 connected on his 28th goal of the year to give Gill the eventual 3-2 win.
“There comes a time in any sport, and in any season, where it’s gut check time,” said head coach Tony Bednarsky. “We got ourselves in an early hole against a team playing very well, but we willed ourselves back into the game, and the kids showed a lot of resiliency and good character by pulling out the close win.”
The Knights now travel to Montclair Kimberley Academy tomorrow, November 7, to battle for the Non-Public B, North sectional title. The two powerhouse programs faced off last week in the Prep B Championship, with the Knights winning the title after a 2-0 victory.
“There are two tough factors going into this game,” said Bednarsky. “The first is that it is difficult to beat a good team twice, and they are going to have revenge on their mind. Secondly, this time we are playing them on their turf so they will have a home field advantage. We will have to bring our “A” game and be ready to play.”
