Boys’ Soccer Defeats 9th-Ranked Pingry

The boys’ soccer team pulled off its biggest win of the season on Tuesday, October 15, by defeating Pingry, the ninth-ranked program in New Jersey, for the first time in school history by a score of 1-0.

“It was a great win for us,” said head coach Tony Bednarsky. “It was the first time Pingry had lost at home this season, and it was also the first time they had been shutout as well, so it really shows how well we performed as a unit.”

Micaah Garnette ’21 scored the lone goal for Gill – a beautiful shot that curved into the top left corner of the net. He was assisted on the score by Gavin Scavino ’22. Alex Borto ’22 was also brilliant in goal for GSB, stopping 11 shots to preserve the win and earn his fourth shutout this season.

“Micaah continues to be a beast up front for us,” said Bednarsky. “This was his sixth game-winning goal for us, so he has definitely been Mr. Clutch. Ayman Kazi ‘20, Finlay Turnbull ‘21, Jacob Siegel ‘20, and Nick Kovalenko ‘20 had an outstanding defensive performance for us, and Borto was rock solid in net.”

Although it is a huge win for the Knights, the veteran coach will be sure to keep his team focused at the larger tasks at hand.

“We definitely proved that we can play and beat anyone in the state,” said Bednarsky. “However, at the end of the day, it is just a regular season game, and we have to make sure we do not get too full of ourselves and peak too soon. We have a lot of important tournament matches coming up, and we are going to give our full focus to each one and not look too far ahead.”
