Hopper Paintings Inspire Students to Convey Feelings
An Upper School assignment had art students studying at artwork by Edward Hopper, select a painting, and writing an art analysis as an introductory step. The students selected works that "spoke to them" and wrote thoughtful descriptions with attention to light and shade and mood and feelings that the paintings conveyed. Then they related all of this to how they are currently.
Using Teams meetings, students discussed the paintings they wrote about and ideas for the artwork that they were planning to create inspired by his style. Students were asked to photograph interior or exterior compositions within or outside their home that show strong light and shadow and also how the work conveys what they are experiencing during quarantine. Students then shared their work taking turns discussing the process they used.
Mrs. Isusi notes, "The writing and artwork that came out of this assignment are exemplary. Students all connected with the artist and were able to spend time developing their work at their own pace from home. I am so proud of the commitment that these students have upheld throughout this time, and their work is a testament to their dedication to their development and need for a creative outlet."
