Great Day for SEEDS & STREAMS
Near perfect weather prevailed yesterday as the Gill campus welcomed 50 NJ SEEDS students in grades 5-7, marking in the second-annual SEEDS & STREAMS day.
Started last July, SEEDS & STREAMS introduces students in the SEEDS young scholars program to a signature course at Gill St. Bernard's: STREAMS. An acronym for sustainability, technology, research, engineering, agriculture, math, and service; STREAMS extends traditional coursework in science with fieldwork that utilizes the natural resources of the campus. Several GSB teachers and rising eighth-graders returned to campus for the day to work with the visiting scholars.
The students learned about plants and flowers in the garden, studied macroinvertebrates in the pond, and made art prints using natural objects and sun-sensitive paper. One of the most popular activities was meeting newly-hatched chicks, goats and other animals at Home Winds Farm. To stay cool, students also tried out the paddle boats in the pond and gathered for ice cream at the end of the day.
Several GSB staff members, teachers, rising eighth-graders, and recent graduates returned to campus to help with the special day, and to garner a 2018 SEEDS / STREAMS t-shirt.
Gill has a longstanding relationship with SEEDS and is proud of the contributions that SEEDS scholars bring to the school community each year. The school has a number of SEEDS students enrolled in grades 7-12. Among this year's graduates were Ivana Mejia ’18, who will be attending Villanova University, Sebastian Meza '18, who will be attending Rutgers University, and Giselle Garcia ‘18—who was in attendance yesterday to lend a hand—and will be attending Boston University this fall.
Now in its 26th year, SEEDS (Scholars, Educators, Excellence, Dedication, Success) offers educational opportunities for highly-motivated students from low-income families, preparing them for entrance into independent middle schools, high schools and selective colleges.
