Home Winds Welcomes Fifth Calf of the Summer

This morning saw the newest addition to the Home Winds Farm: a newborn calf, marking the fifth this summer! The calf was born early this morning, healthy and weighing in at more than 60 pounds.

"It is always a rewarding experience when a new calf is born because of all the work and anticipation that goes into it," says Steve Rabel, the school's farm educator. "There were only a few cows when the farm first started three years ago, and the cattle has really grown since then. There was a one-month-old when I first started, and she is now expecting a calf, so it is really cool to see the full circle."

Home Winds Farm has served as an outdoor learning space for the students at Gill. The farm has helped students get an up-close look at biodiversity, farmland preservation and sustainability. It also serves as an outdoor classroom for the fourth-grade through sixth-grade STREAMS program (Sustainability, Technology, Research, Engineering, Agriculture, Mathematics and Service).

Stay tuned for future news from Home Winds Farm.
