Perfect Weather, Sporting Events Highlight Springfest 2019
The sun was shining and the grill was blazing during GSB’s annual Springfest yesterday as Knights fans came out to enjoy the beautiful weather and cheer on varsity and Middle School athletic competitions. Chef Mike Wendell, assistant dean of student life, manned the grill, serving up free hot dogs and hamburgers.
Spirit wear and concessions at the Booster Lodge along with freshly-made mini donuts from the Glazed and Confused truck were also available.
In varsity softball, the Knights kept it close throughout the game before ultimately falling to Voorhees, 12-6. Ellen Besjak ’21 led the way for Gill as she went 2-4 at the plate and recorded four RBI. She also made several great defensive plays in the field. Also having a great game was Scooter Hulsen ’22 as she went a perfect 3-3 at the plate with three runs scored, three stolen bases, and a walk.
The baseball team also fell on the diamond as the Knights gave up two runs in the final inning to also lose to Voorhees, 4-2. Gill got a great pitching performance from Matt Kalinak ‘21 as he only gave up one earned run over five innings while striking out four batters. He also had a productive day at the plate, recording two walks and a run. Mike Taylor ‘20 got the lone hit on the day for GSB.
The boys’ lacrosse team was also in action as Gill battled Nutley on the turf field. The Knights put up a strong effort, but eventually fell 9-4 to their divisional rival.
The Middle School teams also enjoyed competing in front of the larger crowds, as the girls’ lacrosse team defeated Far Brook 14-7 while the boys’ tennis team came out victorious against Wardlaw-Hartridge.
Also in competition was the varsity golf team, competing against Rutgers Prep at Trump National Golf Course. The Knights defeated the Argonauts 172-197. Having the three lowest scores of the day were Evan Varma ‘20 (40), Nick Policano ‘20 (42), and Sophie Chang ’21 (43).
