GSB Track & Field Program Celebrates another Successful Week in Sports
Both the Upper and Middle School’s track and field teams obtained much success at major events this week:
Gill St. Bernard’s varsity track and field teams shined brightly in Hillsborough on Tuesday afternoon, as Dana Klein ’14 was named a Skyland Conference champion in the 1600-meter (4:57) and 3200-meter (10:46) runs. Other top-20 overall performances were secured by Ludi Zhu ’16 (long jump/4th/16-06.50), Alexandria Benoit ’14 (800m/7th/2:22) and Armani Comick ’15 (triple jump 20th/31-02.00) of the girls’ squad. The 4x400 relay team of Benoit, Sahara Ensley ’16, Klein and Zhu also finished ninth in 4:22, while Colette Bilynsky ’16 (Discus/64-02.00), Samantha Bittman ’17 (800m/2:53), Ensley (800m/2:33), Melissa Jean ’17 (Javelin/73-06.00; Shot Put/25-00.50), Jacqueline Luberto ’16 (100m/17.01 seconds) and Jacqueline Roettger ’16 (400m/1:08; 200m/29.84 seconds) rounded-out scoring for the Knights. The boys were led by Patrik Andersen ’15, a runner-up in the 1600m (4:17) and seventh place finisher in the 3200m (9:55). Jordan Taylor ’14 (2nd/12.50 seconds), Andrew Wible ’15 (5th/12.62 seconds) and Amechi Nwandu ’17 (6th/12.72 seconds) also earned top-10 finishes in their heats during the 100m dash, while Paul Kruger ’16 (54th/27.85 seconds) represented Gill alongside Taylor (36th/25.08 seconds) and Wible (38th/25.14 seconds) in the 200m.
The Middle School track and field program hosted its Silver Spike Invitational earlier this week, welcoming 13 boys’ and girls’ teams to the GSB campus on May 6. Looking to defend their 2013 Silver Spike title, the boys pushed past Wardlaw-Hartridge to capture second overall at this year’s annual invite. Dallas Hoffman ’18 and Alex Imegwu ’18 led the Knights with first place performances in the high jump (5’4”) and shot put (40’6½”). In addition, Hoffman earned second in the shot put (13’6”), and both Imegwu (17.05 seconds) and Timothy “TJ” Chaney ’18 (17.61 seconds) represented GSB with silver and bronze in the 100m hurdles. Sophie Parker ’18 helped the girls to fourth place overall at the Silver Spike, finishing first in the long jump (13’7¼”) for the Knights. Additional medals were presented to Tamia Chaney ’20 and Charlese Reynolds ’18 with silver in the 100m hurdles and shot put, as well as to Lauren Reid ’18 and Gillian Fritzlo ’19 who took bronze in the 100m hurdles and high jump.
