GSB Fencers Earn National Recognition
Varsity fencers Luke Fischer ’16, Samuel Solondz ’15 and Nichole Morley ’17 are staying in shape this summer and earning national recognition.
On June 22, Fischer placed 21st in a field of 125 participants in the Division III men’s epee competition at the National Fencing Championships. Fischer recorded eight wins and two losses throughout the championship match, finishing better than any high school fencer throughout New Jersey in his division. Meanwhile, Solondz took part in the Division III men’s sabre competition on June 25 in Columbus, Ohio, and placed 71st in a field of 126.
Morley was named to the First Team USA Fencing All-Academic Team on June 30. She, as well as Dariya Yefremenko of Colts Neck High School, marked the only New Jersey freshmen to receive the first team honor. A total of 263 fencers nationwide were named to the USA Fencing and Absolute Fencing Gear 2013-14 All-Academic Team, ranging from “First Team” to “Second Team” and, finally, “Honorable Mention.” Athletes must hold a 3.85 GPA or higher in the classroom to achieve first team honors.
