Five Knights Sign to Division I Schools
Earlier today, five senior student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent to compete at the Division I level in college next season.
Lauren Garcia, Zach Martini, Devyn Scott, Will Soucie, and Mike Taylor were surrounded by friends, family, and GSB faculty and staff as they took the next step in their athletic careers.
Lauren Garcia (Davidson College, Women’s Lacrosse) – Garcia has been a mainstay on the growing girls’ lacrosse program at Gill and solidified herself as one of the best players in school history. Last season, she became only the second Knight to reach 100 career goals during a breakout year in which she ended with 56 goals, five assists, and was named a 1st-Team All-Conference selection.
On Why She Chose Davidson
“I loved the strong academics of the school, and it is a great opportunity to compete in the Atlantic-10 Conference. I loved the coach and the atmosphere on campus and could really see myself being there.”
On How Gill Helped Her Achieve this Honor
“I have loved being part of this growing lacrosse program and have enjoyed playing for Coach (Denise) Wilson. Gill helped me become the person I am, especially in the classroom.”
Zach Martini (Princeton University, Men’s Basketball) Zach Martini joined Gill’s basketball team his junior year and made an immediate impact to the program. Last winter, Martini averaged a double-double on the season and helped the Knights claim their fifth-straight Somerset County Championship, as well as their ninth-straight Skyland Conference title. Martini was chosen by NJ.com as one of the top juniors in the state midway through the season, and he was a 1st-Team All-Delaware Division and 1st-Team All-Area selection.
On Why He Chose Princeton
“I really felt a bond with the head coach; he was heavily recruiting me and made it clear that I was a top target for the program. The strong academics are also, of course, a huge factor, I just love the campus, and it felt good to only be an hour away from home.”
On How Gill Athletics Helped Him Achieve this Goal
“I love playing for Coach (Mergin) Sina, he definitely gets the most out of me and pushes me to my limits, and I believe that will really help my transition to the Division I level.”
Devyn Scott (Fairleigh Dickinson University, Women’s Basketball) – Devyn Scott had a breakout season last winter, as the junior helped the Knights to a 13-12 overall record and a 7-3 divisional record, their best showing in the division in three years. Gill also earned a huge win over the Patrick School, the 11th-ranked program in the state at that time. Scott was chosen by NJ.com as one of the top juniors in the state midway through the season, and she was selected to 2nd-Team All-Raritan Division and All-Area.
On Why She Chose FDU
“The coaching staff really wanted me, and that was such an important thing to me. I really enjoy the campus, and I love how it is close to home so my family can attend every one of my games.”
On How Gill Athletics Helped Her Achieve this Goal
“(Head Coach) Mark Gnapp was so involved in my college search and reaching out to coaches for me and helping set me up for success. Overall, Gill has been such a great environment for me, especially in the classroom and helping me get good grades.”
Will Soucie (University of North Alabama – Men’s Basketball) – Soucie had a strong junior campaign last winter averaging over 14 points and almost five rebounds per game. His scoring abilities helped Gill to an incredible 26-5 record, while being the fourth-ranked program in New Jersey. Soucie was named by NJ.com as one of the top juniors in the state midway through the season, and was chosen to 1st-Team All-Raritan Division and All-Area teams.
On Why He Chose UNA
“UNA recruited me the longest and the hardest throughout my high school career. I also really trust the coaching staff, and that’s a big part for me. I fell in love with the South and the campus, and it really seemed like a place I could call home for four years and do great things at.”
On How Gill Athletics Helped Him Achieve this Goal
“The basketball team here is like a brotherhood and a really tight family. Gill is unlike any other program because we play for one another and a lot of schools notice and appreciate how well we play together.”
Mike Taylor (Fordham University, Baseball) – Taylor was an instrumental member of last year’s baseball program which advanced to the Non-Public B Sectional Championship for the third time in four years. He had a great season at the plate, recording 32 hits while scoring 24 runs and driving in 24 runs. He was chosen by NJ.com as one of the top juniors in the state midway through the season and was selected to 2nd-Team, All-Skyland Conference.
On Why He Chose Fordham
“My dad went to Fordham and played basketball there, so it was cool to have that connection. It has a great business school and I want to study finance, so it had perfect academics. Athletically, I feel that it is a good level for me, and Fordham gives me the opportunity to play young and make an impact earlier. I also love how there is a beautiful campus even though you are in New York City.”
On How Gill Athletics Help Him Achieve this Goal
“Coach Pasquale really helped me bring a different approach to the game. He brings a winning attitude and love for the sport, and that has helped me find a love for the grind of the sport and to really just find enjoyment in baseball.”
