Jaren Sina '13 Called to Workout With NBA Team

A couple weeks after graduating from George Washington University, GSB alumnus Jaren Sina '13 got a call from the Denver Nuggets inviting him to a pre-draft workout on June 16. In the weeks leading up to the NBA draft (held on June 22 this year), teams typically bring in small groups of players, six or fewer, for workout sessions. An invitation to a pre-draft workout represents a significant opportunity for potential recruits, giving them a chance to be seen by scouts, coaches and general managers. Most of those hopefuls don't expect to become a first-round draft pick, but being noticed by an NBA team is a still a huge first step for players looking to join other professional leagues in the States or play ball overseas.

Asked about his workout with the Nuggets, Sina called it "an unbelievable opportunity." The 23-year-old guard plans to play with the Kosovo National team this summer, where he also played last summer. After that, he hopes to play in Europe, probably in Italy or Germany. European basketball programs are nothing new for Sina, whose father Mergin played in top professional leagues in Belgium, Spain, Italy, Argentina and Portugal. In fact, Jaren Sina was born in Portugal.

In his senior year at George Washington, Sina posted a great season—starting all 34 games and ranking third in scoring and first in assists. Before transferring to GW, Sina started his college career at Seton Hall, where he was a Big East All-Rookie Team selection and earned Big East Academic All-Star recognition.

At Gill, Sina was a four-year starter for varsity basketball. His senior year, he was designated one of the top 100 high school players in the nation and he still holds the high school points (2146) and assists record for Somerset County. His senior post-season honors included Somerset County Player of The Year, Courier News Player of the Year and first team all-county, all-area, all-conference, all-state, all-sharpshooter and all-senior.
