Double Hat Trick for Anes Mrkulic '17

Playing on home turf, the varsity boys' soccer team defeated Immaculata High 7-4 on Saturday, September 19. With Gill down 2-0 early, the coaches moved Tyler Kwaak '16 from offense to defense and Anes Mrkulic '17 from defense to offense. Mrkulic responded by knocking in six successive and unanswered goals: a rarely-seen double hat trick and a new school record for the boys' soccer program.

According to head coach Tony Bednarsky, "Anes is one of many versatile and talented players on this year's roster. In the previous game, his stellar performance on defense helped us to the 2-1 victory over Somerville." Bednarsky adds, "Needless to say, Anes has cemented his role as an offensive contributor, but he would be the first to tell you they were team goals." Contributing to the day's seven goals were seven assists: three from Steven Bednarsky '17 and one apiece from Max Aunger '17, Kevin Brito '17, Kwaak and Danny Sivolella '16. Kwaak also scored GSB's seventh goal.

No player on the boys' soccer squad has ever garnered six goals in a single game. For the varsity girls' program, the record for most goals in a single game (six) is held by Erin Bayley Buraszeski '99, a member of the GSB Athletics Hall of Fame.

"In my 27 years of coaching, the Gill Immaculata game last Saturday was one of the wildest and most exciting," said Coach Bednarsky.

The boys will play at home again on Thursday, September 24 against undefeated Warren Hills.
