For the ninth time in program history, the boys’ soccer team has been crowned sectional champions.
The most recent title for the Knights came yesterday, after defeating Montclair Kimberley Academy, 1-0. It was a game of defensive brilliance, as the back four defenders of Ayman Kazi ‘20, Jacob Siegel ‘20, Nick Kovalenko ‘20, along with a great performances from David Frankel ‘22, were able to shutout a strong MKA offensive attack.
“The defensive effort was absolutely stellar,” said head coach Tony Bednarsky. “Also, Alex Borto ’22 once again proved why he is the best goalie in the state with his 11 saves to earn another clean sheet this season.”
The lone goal for GSB was scored by Finlay Turnbull ‘21, connecting on a header from a beautiful corner kick from Adam Berrocal ‘21. Amazingly, it was Turnbull who scored the game-winning goal in the Somerset County Championship game; another header off of a Berrocal corner kick.
“When it was all said and done, it came down to Finlay’s big moment and he, once again, came through for us,” said Bednarsky. “MKA has become a fierce rival of ours over the years, and to be able to beat them in the Prep Final and now the Sectional Final is a huge accomplishment of ours.”
Incredibly, the Knights will be looking to win its fifth trophy this season on Sunday, November 10, as they compete for the Non-Public B State title against Moorestown Friends at 5:30 p.m. at Kean University.
“We are cautiously optimistic heading into the state game,” said Bednarsky. “You feel like a team of destiny and fate is on our side. It has been such a great season, but you are always one bad play away from your season coming to a disappointing end. The guys have wanted to be the first team at the school to win back-to-back state championships, and they are going to give everything they have to make it happen.”
