Girls’ Swimming Advances in State Tournament

The girls’ swim team was able to fend off a spirited St. Dominic’s team on Thursday, February 6, defeating the Blue Devils, 90-79, in the first round of the Non-Public B State Tournament.

Despite only winning four of the 11 events, the Knights took a solid lead after earning first and second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle relays. After that sprint event, Gill never looked back.

“Every single swimmer contributed to this victory,” said head coach Nolan Silbernagel. “St. Dominic’s swam significantly faster than they had all year, but our team never gave up or panicked and swam incredibly well. All of the girls who picked up those crucial second, third, and even fourth-place finishes were the real difference makers.”

Leading the way for GSB was Becca Michaels ’20, winning the 200 individual medley (2:25.98) and the 100 backstroke (1:06.34). GSB’s other lone individual winner was Maddie Soultanian ‘22 in the 100 freestyle (58.91).

Gill’s only victorious relay came in the 200 freestyle, where Michaels, Soultanian, Laura Howard ’21, and Olivia Soultanian ’22 teamed up to take first in 1:57.93.

The Knights return to the pool on Tuesday, February 11, when they travel to the Kroc Aquatic Center in Camden to take on Moorestown Friends in the quarterfinals.
