Congratulations to the chess team on taking first place in the 11th-grade competition at the New Jersey K-12 Grade Chess Championship, which was held on Sunday at Brookdale Community College in Middletown, New Jersey. The GSB team comprised six juniors: Lucas Bernui, Alex DeRing, Mitch Fishbein, Miles Griffin, John Jean and Christopher Kruger. In addition to garnering the team win, two of the players finished in the top ten for individual competition: Mitch Fishbein (third) and Miles Griffin (ninth).
All of the juniors are members of the Gill St. Bernard’s Chess Club. According to Upper School computer science teacher Ian Prevost, who advises the club, “This is the first team competition for the club this year, although some of the students have played in local tournaments on the weekends. We have been meeting to practice and study chess after school on Mondays and Wednesdays, and some of the players have been spending significant time studying chess at home as well.”
Last year, the club claimed first place in the 10th-grade competition at the K-12 Grade tournament.
