Varsity Teams Perform Well in State Championship Events

The GSB athletics program saw fine showings from its varsity fencing and indoor track and field teams yesterday.
 
Early yesterday morning, the varsity fencing team headed to the Prep B Fencing Championships in Princeton, N.J., where the girls' sabre and epee squads both earned bronze medals for their efforts. Devon Kaiser '15, Emma Corbett '16, Samantha DeRing '16, Jacqueline Luberto '16 and Zeel Patel '15 comprised the third-place sabre squad, while Jada Davis '16 teamed with Nichole Morley '17, Paige Stewart '17 and Charlotte Walsh '17 for third at epee. Davis was second overall in the individual girls' epee competition and Luke Fischer '16 took third in the individual boys' epee event for the Knights.
 
Dana Klein '14 of the varsity indoor track and field team won all three girls' distance events (800-meter run; 1600m; 3200m) at the Non-Public B Group Indoor Track Championships in Toms River, N.J. yesterday afternoon. Alexandria Benoit '14 also finished second in the 1600m, fourth in the 3200m and fifth in the 800m to help the girls to second place overall. The boys placed eighth overall behind a gold medal from Patrik Andersen '15 in the 1600m and a silver in the 800m. Other top-10 performers included Sahara Ensley '16 (5th/3200m; 6th/1600m), Armani Comick '15 (3rd/girls' shot put), Ludi Zhu '16 (8th/55m), Jacob Kruger '15 (10th/3200m) and Joshua "Jay" Corbett '14 (10th/boys' shot put).
