GSB Board of Trustees Endorses Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Community (DEIC) Action Plan

As our nation seeks to better understand and address persistent social and racial injustices in our Black communities, Gill St. Bernard's School has engaged our community over recent weeks with challenging and constructive conversations. This has been a time of meaningful and ongoing reflection for all of us-students, faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, and alumni—as we remain committed to the premise that a diverse community of students, faculty, administration, staff, trustees, and alumni is essential to who we are as a school.

Responding to the continuing racial violence befalling our nation, Gill St. Bernard's School is grounded in our responsibility for fostering an environment of safety and belonging for every member of the community. Aligned with the school's 2019-2024 Strategic Plan, the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Community (DEIC) Action Plan has been created to provide deliberate and effective steps we will take to improve and enhance the climate in our school and to sustain an authentically inclusive anti-racist community. We openly embrace and accept our responsibility to combat systemic and institutional racism by developing more inclusive curricula across all subjects and reevaluating programs, policies, and practices through the lens of equity and inclusion. Creating an environment of respect, equity and inclusion is embedded in our Mission.

At its recent meeting, the Gill St. Bernard's Board of Trustees unanimously endorsed the plan finding it "comprehensive, solid, and moving us in the right direction." According to Head of School Sid Rowell, "By collectively exploring questions of race, equality, and empowerment, we will continue shaping how we teach and learn, and by creating affirming and welcoming opportunities for everyone in our community to express themselves and their beliefs, we are assuring that all voices in our community will be heard."
