Girls’ Tennis Has Busy First Week

No other team at Gill had a busier opening week than the girls’ tennis squad, as the Knights competed in two conference matches and a tournament. Gill rose to the challenge of having this tough schedule, as it won a total of three of its four matches.

The Knights opened up their season with a strong 4-1 victory over Skyland Conference foe, Hunterdon Central, on Thursday, September 5. Mayjah Jean Pierre ’21, Ella Baker ’21, and Michaela Kroon ’22 swept the singles matches, while Tori Goldin ’20 and Callie Dahler ‘22 won in first doubles.

Gill continued its dominance the following day against another conference opponent as the girls defeated Phillipsburg, 5-0. Jean Pierre, Baker, Kroon, Goldin, and Dahler were all victorious again, and the second doubles team of Caitlyn Matthews ’20 and Sophie Nourbakhsh ‘21 also won to complete the sweep.

GSB remained undefeated with another strong win as it took down Montclair, 5-0, in the first round of the Millburn Tournament on Saturday, September 7. Unfortunately, the Knights were unable to keep their perfect record alive as they eventually fell to Kent Place, the number one team in New Jersey, by a score of 5-0 later in the day.

The girls will get right back at it today, September 9, for a top-20 match up against Pingry.
