Girls’ Soccer Looks to Repeat as Champions
Last season, the girls’ soccer team was able to claim its first championship since 2007, by winning the Skyland Conference Mountain Division Title. After waiting 11 years to hoist a trophy, the Knights are even hungrier to bring home more hardware this fall.
“Our number one goal is to repeat as division champions,” said Head Coach Mike Williams. “Winning the title one year is technically the easy part. Defending it is where it will be harder -- because now we have the target on our back, and every team in our conference is going to want to play its best against us.”
Even though the Knights have to replace multiple-skilled players from last year’s senior class, including their top goal scorer Hayley Goldin ’19, Gill will be bringing back a ton of talent from the squad that went 14-3-2 in 2018.
Leading the way for GSB will be Third-Team All-State Non-Public selection Teresa Zimmer ’20, who is a scoring threat and the team’s main goalie. Returning impact players include a very strong senior class in Emily Raia ‘20, Sam Lowe ’20, Ava Kolb ’20, and Lexi Yates ’20; solid defenders Hayley Armstrong ’21 and Emily Gnoy ’21; and superb sophomores in Tess Kelly ’22, Lea Gnoy ’22, and Mia Kolb ’22. Williams is also particularly excited to see what this year’s freshman group can do, in particular -- Grace Crimi, Ava DiCesare, Lauren Rossiter, and Delaney Yates.
“The expectations are definitely high this year,” said Williams. “Honestly, the key to navigating a tough schedule is to perform well at home and to have good home crowds. The Blue Crew was in full force last year at home games, and we would love to have that again because it really helps us play our best.”
