The arts are a vital part of a Gill St. Bernard's education, enriching the student experience and the life of the school. The arts encourage students to take creative risks, to discover their passions, and to present their work before an audience. Finally, the arts remind each of us what it means to be human and of the transformative power of creativity.
Whether they are dancing, painting or singing, children are beautifully attuned to the creative process. Our Lower School arts program builds on the inherent joy of creativity, providing students the skills and understanding to express themselves with greater confidence and clarity through a range of art forms.

In addition, our arts program gives children greater opportunities for exploration and discovery, encourages collaboration and creative problem-solving and complements learning in other classes.
Through creative self-expression and performance, Middle School students develop their own individual voices and an authentic confidence in their abilities and contributions. In the fine arts, students to continue to refine their understanding of artistic styles, design principles, and technique. Bringing these principles together in their own work allows them to see how each design choice shapes the overall impact of a piece.

Coursework in the performing arts provides further skill development in music, singing and theater, while giving students a secure and comfortable environment in which to explore speaking and performing in front of an audience.
The Upper School offers an impressive range of coursework in the arts—from introductory and exploratory classes to rigorous in-depth preparation for students interested in pursuing the arts in college and beyond. The size of our program is large enough to allow for a rich variety of electives but small enough that opportunities are open to all of our students in the studio arts and in our award-winning music and theater programs.

Each year, several of our graduates go on to top-tier college programs in art, design, music and theater. For those students who do not intend to study the arts after Gill, lessons in collaboration, design-thinking and the ability to take creative risks are invaluable.
